LEARNER SKILLS

Once you have obtained learner’s license and basic skills of driving, follow the steps designed to teach you the skills to drive safely. It is important to learn through trained driving instructors. They use vehicles with dual controls that enable them to take control of the vehicle if necessary. Instructors should be responsible, skilled and confident to demonstrate, effective communicator having patience to instruct the new driver effectively. Driving Instructor is to develop new skills among trainees, give a lot of encouragement whenever they try a new skill for the first time. Make sure the new driver carries their learner licence at all times while driving. Ensure that it is displayed on the front and back of the vehicle that a learner driver is driving. The lessons start with easier driving skills and move on to more complex situations. It's suggested to begin driving on roads having less traffic. Once you become skillful then move to dense traffic.
PRE DRIVING CHECKS
Before you commence to drive, you should make sure your vehicle is safe to drive. Exterior checks: look for cleanliness of number plate, any damages and dents onto the vehicle. Peek underneath. Look for leakages of coolant, brake fluid, engine/gear oil etc. and lying animals. Now check head light, glasses, lights and doors are intact & clean. Check tyres for abrasion, cut, pressure, broken or loose studs. Tyre tread depth should not be less than 1.6mm. L plates must be displayed on the lower left-hand corner of the windscreen.
Interior checks: look for cleanliness. There should not be any loose objects around. Driving posture: align seat to have sufficient leg & hand room, adjust mirrors for you to see near, far sides and behind. Wear seat belt. Check hand and foot controls – accelerator, brake, clutch, steering, gears and hand brake- for smooth working. Switch on ignition. Check Indicators and brake lights should work by its glow or reflection. Check fuel level. Start the engine check dash board & instrument cluster - oil pressure, charging, ABS, Brake fluid lights should go off.

The Courses are designed having a wide-ranging overview of fleet operations. They include a study of the main options, the cost-reduction techniques and the administration needed to keep the fleet under effective control and safe & timely deliveries. Courses are not only aimed at first timer employees but also serving the industry. We also suggests such courses for those who undertake the responsibilities of running the fleet and are in line with other job functions i.e. Human Resources or Facilities Management.

Fleet Management courses:
1.Introduction to present scenario of various Fleets in India.
2.Risks and hazards of the road environment ( road user behaviour, causes of accidents)
MOVING OFF
Indicate your intention, disengage the clutch by pressing down pedal syncronise first gear, release of the handbrake/park brake in a manner that car should not move uncontrolled. Hold the steering wheel with a light grip, with hands in either the ‘ten to two' or ‘quarter to three' position. Check mirrors again and check the right-hand blind spot look over shoulder. When feel safe then release the clutch and accelerate smoothly, quickly and safely joining main road.
STEERING CONTROL
Practice driving forward through 90-degree turns. Indicate your intention the vehicle should be in a safe area, having enough room to make turns at low speed. The driver should have both hands lightly gripping the steering wheel in either the ‘ten to two' or ‘quarter to three' position. Practice left and right 90-degree turn, maintaining the correct lane & position. Use push-pull method to steer.

CHANGING GEAR Select the appropriate gear and use the clutch and accelerator in a coordinated manner while maintaining steering control. Keep eyes on the road ahead rather than looking at gear lever. Practice shifting into higher & then lowering gears. Select the appropriate gear for the situation or road speed without over-revving the engine.

REVERSING
Check the mirrors (inside and outside) to see no one is around you. Indicate left before moving. Position the vehicle next to the kerb. Engage hand brake. Depress clutch while putting the vehicle in reverse gear. Check mirrors and blind spots for hazards. Turn to look over left shoulder through rear window in the direction the vehicle will travel in. Slowly release clutch syncronise release of handbrake brake to avoid uncontrolled rolling. Press down accelerator slightly with right foot and slowly release the clutch pedal.
Practice slowly reversing in a straight line while continuously glancing through the rear window. Smoothly stop car bring in neutral, engage handbrake and switch off engine.
JOINING ROAD
The engine should be started, with handbrake ON and the vehicle in NEUTRAL gear. The driver should look ahead and behind for hazards, using mirrors both inside and outside. Indicate his intention at least 5 seconds in advance. Now depress clutch engage first gear, start releasing clutch hold at biting point with handbrake synchronise in a manner that car not role uncontrolled. Check mirrors again and check the right-hand blind spot look over your shoulder. When you feel safe release the clutch and accelerate smoothly, quickly and safely joining main road.

TURNINGS
Check mirrors and blind spot by looking over their shoulder. Indicate at least five seconds before starting to turn. Check the intersection for hazards. Slowdown and Keep the vehicle in the correct position. Give way to vehicles if required. Check the mirrors again on completing the turn. Once finished, accelerate to an appropriate speed depending on road environment.

ROUNABOUT
Check the mirrors (inside and outside). Position the vehicle appropriately in the lane for the intended route through the roundabout. Indicate right, start slowing the vehicle, stop or give way if required. Look for hazards. Select an appropriate gap in the traffic. Before exit Indicate left before leaving the roundabout checking the mirrors over shoulder while exiting the roundabout. Accelerate back to an appropriate road speed for the conditions.

ASCENT
Be able to safely bring the vehicle to a stop on an incline and again move off without rolling backwards or stalling the engine. When stopping, look for a safe parking space and look into mirrors. Slowdown, indicate your intention look over your shoulder before moving towards the kerb. Stop & engage the handbrake to lock wheels. When moving off again start engine, engage in first gear, look ahead and behind for hazards, glancing into mirrors and over right shoulder. Indicate right for at least five seconds before moving. Press accelerator giving a little more power than usual, and hold it in this position. Allow the clutch pedal to come up slowly and smoothly until the sound of the engine changes hold at this biting point slowly release the handbrake to avoid uncontrolled rolling Again check into mirrors, look over right shoulder to check the blind spot. Move off smoothly, accelerating to an appropriate speed.

PARKING
Identify an appropriate space to park from a distance. Slowdown, indicate your intention, position the vehicle bringing closer & scan surrounding for hazards, glance into mirrors and over shoulder. When safe to go, move forward slowly and then turn into the parking space.

SCANING & HAZARD PERCEPTION RECOGNISITION
Looking far up maintaining 15 to 20 seconds eye lead time, shift your eye balls to corner of your eyes, glance into mirrors at regular intervals alongside, near & far. Constantly keep scanning surroundings for hazards in 360 degree while driving. Recognise and be aware of various driving hazards so that you react appropriately to those hazards by adjusting driving behaviour by changing speed or direction.
