Development in the field of roads and highways and the growth of number of vehicles, in recent years, has increased road traffic, which unfortunately has resulted in increased road accidents. EIGHTEEN people die in road accidents every hour in India. Pedestrians form a major portion of the road users being killed in road accidents. Major victims are children and youngsters. It is essential that students of all age groups in schools, colleges and other Institutions be made aware of the importance of road safety.
This problem of road accidents can be alleviated by making the road users aware about the correct usage of the road. Thus Road Safety Education has become a necessity to deal with the increasing accident rate. Safe road use practices, ingrained in the young minds, can prove to be an effective measure in improving the road safety scenario in the country. ![]() school children must be made aware of the importance of road safety and given a basic understanding of the issues in existing road safety scenario. This will help them to adopt safe practices in walking, cycling and road crossing etc which are important for avoiding any accident on the road. Similarly riding a motorcycle is also a responsible business as they are at greater risks from fellow road users once involved chances of injuries are high. Youngsters ride because it thrills, interest them to exhilarate, sport as style or trendy elements. Some take it up as economical mode of transportation. They are aware that they don’t have protective shell to take impact still don’t pay attention to advice & examples of others. Some places in the country by law we have yet to enforce wearing of safety helmet. Riders of Sikh religion wearing turban are exempted. Most of riders tend to weave in & out in dense traffic, don’t even look round to see positioning & course of other vehicles seems not aware their action will affect fellow road users. The learning resources developed through these various topics being taught, formulates a sound educational program. This involves teachers to actively deliver, evaluate and document what’s been learnt from the program. A thorough risk assessment is conducted to improve & redesign road safety curriculum. |
